Lettuce learn: The more that we know about plants,
and how they grow and interact with their environment,
then the better decisions we can make.
Agribusiness Training Ltd (ABT) is an NZQA-
accredited private training provider, offering up-to-
date practical training in all fields of agriculture and
horticulture throughout New Zealand. All
horticulture courses offered by Agribusiness Training
are NZQA unit standards-based and contribute to
the following qualifications -- National Certificate
Horticulture Level 3, and National Certificate
Horticulture Level 4.
ABT Horticultural courses are targeted at people
wanting to retrain to enter the horticulture industry,
people already working in the industry and wanting
to further their skills and knowledge, and people
wanting to make a supplementary income. Students
who have attended ABT courses find it very useful to
not only learn industry methods and techniques, but
to learn the reasons behind different activities that
they may already carry out in their field of
horticulture. The more that we know about plants,
and how they grow and interact with their
environment, then the better decisions we
The following courses are currently being offered
by ABT throughout Canterbury: Vegetable
Production, and Plant Propagation. They are part-
time and timetabled outside of normal work hours.
Depending on course numbers, ABT often also
schedules a course option during work hours for
those where this option suits. ABT has the flexibility
for students to attend class at another venue close
by if particular timetable dates don't fit their
schedule. This allows the students to get the ''best
effect'' from training without affecting their current
routines and lifestyles.
In 2012 ABT introduced an Amenity Landscape
Course. This course is being offered throughout
Canterbury again in 2013 and will commence in
September. It is aimed at giving students the skills
and knowledge in the field of amenity horticulture
Topics covered include lawn establishment,
renovation, repair and maintenance; plant selection
and maintenance; pruning and training; plant
nutrition; irrigation operation; plant identification;
and plant health management.
Anyone wanting further information on any of
these courses should contact Janice Mills,
0800 476 9835, email@example.com or
view the ABT website at: agribusiness.ac.nz.

This term there is an interesting range
of courses involving language for
travellers, health and fitness regimes,
and practical skills, such as woodwork,
upholstery and cuisine.
Perhaps the highlight of this term's
programme is the opportunity to link
the popular mosaics course to a
significant community enterprise.
For some time, the course has focused
on creating works of art using rubble
and bits and pieces from the

This will be a joint project by the
mosaics class, students of Rangiora High
School technology department, who will
design a clock that will run on solar
power, sponsors ''Sow and Grow

The result will be an asset, a work of
art, and a reminder of the many ways
the community has come together.
Most courses run on week nights
during term time but there are weekend
workshops in woodwork, upholstery and
contemporary Mediterranean cuisine.
