Keep an evening free between May 1 and May 17, and buy tickets now so you don’tmiss out. Set in prohibition-era Chicago, the musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name, penned by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins and revolving around criminals and crimes she actually reported on. It is a satire on corruption in the administration of justice and the concept of the ‘‘celebrity criminal’’. Cook County jail is home to a merry band of murderesses who have all killed their husbands or lovers. There’s nothingmoney can’t buy in this joint, and inmates Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly do a deal with smooth-talking,manipulative lawyer Billy Flynn to keep them from death row, while he promises to make them stars. The original Broadway production of Chicagoopened in New York in 1975 and ran for 936 performances. A Broadway revival holds the record for the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. Next month, Chicagois presented by the North Canterbury Musical Society, directed by Ravil Atlas, musically directed by Leanne O’Mahoney, and choreographed by Annette Searle. The show runs from Wednesday Advertising Promotion 6017668AA Turbulent times: Themusical, Chicago, will keep you on the edge of your seat. to Saturday at 7.30pm, with a matinee on May 17 at 2pm, at the Rangiora High School Auditorium.
