Fabulous, feel-good foot fashion
By JANINE SUNDBERG
It's officially autumn and that means the
temperatures are getting cooler and you'll
most likely need something slightly heavier
and warmer on your feet than strappy sandals
or canvas slip-ons.
Without doubt my favourite autumn and
winter footwear is my collection of superbly
comfortable Ziera boots and I am always
interested to see what tempting new styles
the company produces each year.
This year's range of Ziera boots looks
fantastic, with sumptuous plums and
burgundies, teals and greys to the fore along
with the ever-fashionable blacks and browns.
However, as well as the beautiful colours,
the feature of this year's Ziera boot range are
the layers of tone and texture used,
incorporating leather and suede and some
stylish decorative features such as buckles and
Ziera has declared that this is the season of
the ankle boot and they have certainly
assembled a beautiful collection to choose
from, while still providing a good range of
stunning longer boot style choices as well.
The Ziera range of women's autumn/winter
shoes is also a visual symphony with lots of
different styles, colours and finishes to choose
from and the Auckland-based Ziera design
team have kept the Ziera footwear range
totally up to date with overseas trends.
The Ziera shoe range also features layers of
tone and texture with leather and suede both
incorporated into some styles, combined with
a variety of heel designs to choose from.
The great thing about the Ziera footwear
range is that all of the boots and shoes offered
are top quality and supremely comfortable,
maintaining the company's dedication to both
style and comfort which is at the heart of its
The Ziera footwear range continues to be
widely recommended by New Zealand
While the Ziera footwear brand name only
came into existence in 2010, the company that
designs and creates this footwear has in fact
been in existence since 1933.
That was when brothers-in-law Mervyn
Adams and David Robertson went into
partnership as podiatrists and quickly found a
lack of shoe styles which they considered were
orthopaedically good enough to recommend
to their clients.
As a result they began an ambitious project
to study the feet of 10,000 women and create
unique shoe moulds (or ''lasts'') which were
based on anatomical need. In 1946 a local
manufacturer was found and the range
developed, known as Mervyn Adams Arch
Supporting Shoes, was immediately a success
with the first Mervyn Adams Shoes store
opening in Hamilton in 1950.
In 1961 the company established its own
shoe factory to meet ever-growing demand
and in 1970 they began exporting to Australia.
By the end of that decade Mervyn Adams
Shoes had also entered the American footwear
In 1996 all of the shoes produced by the
company were marketed under the Kumfs
brand name which remained until the change
to the Ziera brand name in 2010.
The company is now run by Andrew
Robertson, grandson of co-founder David
Most of the styles in the Ziera range of
footwear are available in sizes 4 to 13
including half sizes, as well as a variety of
width fittings from medium to extra wide.
Ziera Shoes are available at quality footwear
stores throughout New Zealand including a
number in Canterbury and one supplier in
