CPIT course ticksall student's boxes
Time to upskill: Anne Addei is in the process of turning her working life around
by taking Computing for Free courses through CPIT.
When Anne Addei was made
redundant last September she knew
it was time to upskill. After 23 years
in sales she was ready for a change
of career but felt that she first
needed to build on her basic
understanding of technology.
One day she talked to CPIT's
Campus Connect staff in New
Brighton about community-based
Computing for Free. The programme
ticked all the boxes.
''At this stage of my life if I'm
going to do something it has to be
right for me and for my boys,'' she
said. ''Redundancy turned out to be
a good thing because it made me
think about what I want to do with
the rest of my working life.''
Computing for Free offers self-paced
learning allowing Anne to arrange
studying around her two children.
She goes to the hub five mornings a
week. Having almost completed her
Level 2 Computing Certificate, she
can now use a range of programmes
such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint
and is now planning to work toward
her Level 3 certificate.
''As you get older you do have the
pressure of new technology, people
need to learn the tools. What really
encouraged me at Campus Connect
was that I expected to see a lot of
young people and instead I found a
real range of people.''
Anne appreciates the Campus
''The staff are really awesome and
very professional. My last paper on
PowerPoint was challenging but
they were very encouraging. They're
a real credit to CPIT.''
Campus Connect manager Peter
Nock says that Computing for Free
caters to different types of learners --
from job seekers to those who are
already employed and want to
extend their skills.
''We have many students who are
highly qualified but need to be able
to use their computer 'tools' more
efficiently and effectively. Our self-
paced scheduling allows them to fit
studying around their work
schedule,'' he said.
''The skills our students learn in
using MS Office, especially in the
National Certificate in Computing
Level 3, are well above what most
office workers know or have learnt
on the job.''
Campus Connect has hubs in New
Brighton, Rangiora, Hornby,
Bishopdale and the city. To find out

The rest of the students' week involves

Students remain enthusiastic in the other
areas within the academies programme: CISCO
(Computer networking), music, theatre, trades
and carving, which also run for 12 hours.
Aranui Academies is also offering the CTC
hospitality programme this year for the first
time, which is a very pleasing development.
These academy pathways give young
people the opportunity to broaden their
educational pathways and experiences, and
also help youth who are uncertain about their
futures to have an opportunity to explore
areas outside mainstream education.
