Get kids ready now as
junior rugby looming
All class: Winger Scott Hamilton displays skills honed as a young player in
North Canterbury's Glenmark Rugby Club.
Rugby is one of the most popular
sports for children in New Zealand
and our success in the Rugby World
Cup as well as the continued success
of the All Blacks in 2012 had an
impact on player numbers, right
down to the younger grades.
The game originated in a town
called Rugby in England in about
1823, when a lad playing soccer at a
private school picked up the ball
and ran with it. This was the
beginning of the distinctive game
that became known as rugby
The game was introduced to New
Zealand in about 1870, and by 1893
we were ready to field our first
national team on a tour of Australia.
Rugby is a game requiring high
levels of fitness, speed and strength,
combined with excellent ball skills
and the ability to be a team player.
Traditionally a male sport, rugby
now has an increasing number of
female players and we have our own
women's national team, the Black
In New Zealand we are lucky to
have a strong rugby infrastructure
which works hard to help Small
Blacks become All Blacks.
Budding rugby players can sign
up to play at either school or a local
rugby club. However, there is an
important distinction to be aware of:
only clubs will offer Saturday games
for small children. If your child plays
at school, games will generally take
place during normal school hours.
Rugby involves sprinting, tackling,
pushing and kicking. Health benefits
include cardiovascular fitness and
endurance, developing strength in
the upper and lower body, agility,
speed, ball-handling and kicking
Rugby also brings other benefits,
such as team skills, social interaction,
communication skills and self-
For children under 8 years games
are non-contact and are non-
competitive, and as they move on,
new skills are introduced at
appropriate levels of development.
If players can be taught all
elements of rugby in a positive and
creative environment, it can help
them excel for many years to come.
Clubs within both North Canterbury
and Ellesmere sub-unions are
conscious of this and work hard to
encourage junior players.
If you are keen to introduce your
child to this popular and exciting
sport, give some thought to the
registration day which is coming up
in February at your local club.
Remember also, whether in North
Canterbury or Ellesmere catchment
areas teams are often combined
where numbers require it, and this
will affect the distances you may
travel to Saturday games.
At the moment rugby matters are
far from the minds of those of us
busy watching cricket and tennis,
but after registration things will
