As a parent with two children currently
attending Rangiora High School Nursery
School I am utterly flabbergasted,
disappointed and saddened by the news
that the Rangiora High School Board of
Trustees have voted to evict the Nursery
School from its current location.
The news that Rangiora's community-
based early childhood centre (with a proven
history for providing quality early
childhood education for our community's
children) faces finding and funding a new
location and buildings is simply
It is my understanding that board of
trustees are charged with setting schools'
strategic direction in consultation with
parents, staff and students.
Could members of the board please stand
up and show us -- the people of this
community -- what, if any, consultation has
As for your article (Northern Outlook,
September 8), as a local builder I cannot
believe that the board have allowed its
current buildings to become so dilapidated.
I'm sure the future generations of
children who are unable to attend this
fantastic purpose-built early childhood
centre will not thank you, High School
Board of Trustees, for your decision.
Our children are the third generation of
family who have had the privilege of
attending the amazing community purpose-
built early childhood centre, RHS Nursery
The Rangiora High School Board of
Trustees needs to be accountable to the
community regarding their decision to evict
Nursery School from its current site.
The process undertaken and lack of
community consultation is of great concern.
Why have none of you fronted up and
bothered to come and look at this purpose-
built ECE facility?
The Rangiora and wider North
Canterbury community has, over a 74-year
period, given and donated much time, effort
They have fundraised in good faith for
the Nursery School -- not the High School.
What right do you have to take
ownership of a building that was purpose-
built through community funding?
How have you allowed some of your
buildings to get so rundown?
Don't you have an obligation to the
Ministry of Education to maintain your
buildings as Nursery School have?
RHS owns so much land; it seems hard to
believe there are no other options available.
Please find an alternative solution so
Nursery School can stay on its current site.
The homeschooled 14-year-old who recently
wrote to your newspaper comparing
humans to ducks has been poorly educated.
If she is homeschooled because her family
claims to be Christian then her rant about
homosexuality is even sadder.
If Christ's teachings were to love one
another'' and if we are made in God's image
then there is a lesson in humanity which
has seriously been excluded from her
As a Christian I do believe we are made
in God's image, and if this is so then I
wonder what lessons he was giving to us
all? For me it is one of tolerance and love
which has been reinforced by the teachings
of Christ, who, as a Christian, I follow.
It is a shame this young woman's
misinformed remarks have been taken up
by international media, but bears
testament to the power of the internet, if
I am not Christian, I even refer to the Bible
as the best-selling novel in the world, but I
don't knock religion to those who do believe
as I am aware of the strength they gain
from their belief.
However, there are some who believe in
the Bible implicitly, as do some of those
who have jumped to Jasmin's defence, on
homosexuality and evolution.
Science established a long time ago that
all babies are given the building blocks to
be either male or female, hence males
having nipples that are superfluous.
What establishes sexuality is the amount
of testosterone in the mother's system early
in the development stage, much more than
normal you get a male, less you get a
Then there is a fuzzy gap in the middle
that produces a homosexual.
Homosexuality is not a choice or a sin --
it is an accident of chemistry. So accept
them as a part of the community.
On evolution, the evidence for is very
strong and growing all the time. When it
comes to creation there is absolutely no
evidence to prove it occurred.
Trevor Court and Rick Caddick's letters
should give us all great room for thought.
Their clearly demonstrated examples of
unfair, discriminatory and inequitable local
government rating procedures, complete
with our ever-rising surges in rate demands
and continuing inequities, should give us
all cause for further consideration and
Hopefully a national movement will
eventually evolve to address the issues they
But from the examples they have given,
there is now clearly a need for much further
public debate and consideration of the
Naturally we all need to take advantage
of local government facilities and services,
and to be supportive of them, but there is a
great need to do that more fairly than the
current system provides. It would also be
helpful, therefore, if because of those
matters we could hear from both the
Waimakariri and Hurunui Councils of their
opinion about these points raised and their
views on the Government's current
consideration of the amendments to the
Local Government Act.
The matter is too important to be ignored
any longer, and we all need to be more fully
and publicly aware of the matters these two
