Many will be aware that Paper Plus
and Toyworld were severely
impacted by the closure of their
High St premises in March 2012.
''Initially, during the seismic
activities, we felt lucky that we
hadn't been negatively affected,''
said David Knox.
''After both the September and
February events Rangiora High St
experienced an influx of
customers. Unfortunately, our
world was turned upside down
when we were advised that our
building was deemed to be
dangerous in the event of another
earthquake and we were given 48
hours notice to close our business.
''We took the decision to close

Craftsmen builders who use
their heads, not just tools
Chatterton Builders -- a company
of craftsmen...whoalso know
how to run a business!
Chatterton Builders specialise in
architectural builds and
renovations but also build and
renovate conventional homes and
Brent Chatterton started the
company in 2005 and developed it
into a successful independent
building business. When the
recession hit, being solution
focused, Brent looked at various
opportunities to preserve his
business and his great team of
builders. He created a design
centre and employed a sales
person, thus differentiating his
company from other independent
builders through the range of
services on offer.
These enabled immediate
access to significant repair and
rebuild work following the
earthquakes but also enabled
them to increase and improve
their services helping customers
plan and build their dream homes.
Chatterton Builders have been
careful to grow at a rate where
they can keep control and
maintain their high level of
customer service, core values and
the high quality product expected
from craftsmen builders.
Their staff are critical to their
success and they have built up a
great team who use their heads
not just their tools! Chatterton
Builders are a family-run business.
Their core values reflect their own
family values and their goals are
aimed at creating a great customer
Toyworld and PaperPlus have
been in the heart of Rangiora High
St for nearly 30 years. The strength
of this business comes from the
passion of the owners, the
commitment of the staff and the
support of the brands.
The current owners, David Knox
and Neil Olsson, have been at the
helm for nearly 17 years. Both have
strong business backgrounds but
not in retail.
David was involved with the
business many years ago as the
accountant and when the
opportunity arose to buy the
business, he contacted his mate
Neil (an electrical contractor) and
made him an offer he could not
''Our overall goal is to offer our
customers a well stocked and
excellent product range at a fair
price,'' says David.
''We want our customers to have
a good shopping experience every
time they come into our shop.
''After all, without customers we
haven't got a business.''
The layout of the shop and the
calibre of the staff are equally as
important says Neil.
''We have endeavoured to
provide an organised, pleasant,
friendly environment for
customers with our staff having
good 'customer focused skills',
good product knowledge and the
motivation to go out of their way
to meet the customers needs and
ensure complete customer
Of course there is no point in
focusing on customer service
without the right product and they
attempt to provide a good
selection (some have described
the shop as ''a one stop shop'').
