40 NORTHERN OUTLOOK, AUGUST 27, 2014 It’s a Clarkville v Kaiapoi final By SAM SHERWOOD North Canterbury’s top two netball teams will take centre court again this weekend to see once and for all who is 2014’s best. Kaiapoi has been relentless all season, going undefeated in the second round of competition. Their finals opponent, Clarkville, have only lost once – to Kaiapoi 53-44 several weeks ago. Clarkville, the most experi- enced side in the competition, made the final after overcoming a spirited performance by Ohoka. Ohoka were hoping to prove their doubters wrong, and with a one-point lead after the first quarter they were on the right track. They stayed with Clarkville the rest of the way and were only down 37-41 heading into the final quarter. ‘‘We did really well right up to the last quarter – that’s where we lost it,’’ Ohoka coach Graham Johnston said. Clarkville’s defence took on another level and the team went on to win the game 56-44. Clarkville centre Robyn Smith said it took a full team effort to get the win. ‘‘We actually got our flow on in the last quarter and it just seemed to open up.’’ Having only held one training Team defence: Clarkville’s Robyn Smith, left, and Amanda Hardy try to stop Ohoka’s offence getting any momentum. all season, Smith said the side was happy to even be in the final. ‘‘We are always pleased to get this far against all these young, fit teams that train twice a week.’’ Smith was aware that Kaiapoi will go into the final as favourites, but remained confident Clarkville had what it takes to claim the trophy. ‘‘We will all just have to play really well,’’ she said. Full stretch: Clarkville’s Casey Harimate reaches out to deflect the ball from Ohoka’s Amelia Hindson. Pictures:SamSherwood As for Ohoka, Johnston said his young side would look to build on all the work they had accomplished this season and use it as a platform for next year. In the other semifinal, Kaiapoi put any question of an upset to rest as they convincingly defeated Rangiora High School 68-40. The final is on Saturday at 1.30pm at the North Canterbury Netball Centre in Rangiora.
